History
Since its inception in 2001, Ngarda has offered strong commercial and technical services linked to the local community by providing employment for Indigenous people.
Ngarda came about after the acknowledgement of its shareholders that there was a perception by the mining and construction sectors that Indigenous people were generally lacking in the skills and training necessary to meet industry needs.
A commitment was made by Ngarda's shareholders from the beginning to provide support and guarantee the standard of work. Issues which had caused other Indigenous enterprises to fail.
Indigenous Business Australia, the Ngarda Ngarli Yarndu Foundation and Henry Walker Eltin developed a business model they believed would create a sustainable, long term and profitable venture providing an avenue to increasing Indigenous employment and involving Indigenous people in the benefits that flow from resource projects in Western Australia.
Ngarda was formally launched on 5 July 2001 by the Honourable Senator, Ian Campbell at a ceremony attended by more than 50 people including leaders of Indigenous communities, politicians and senior management of major mining companies.
In February 2006, Leighton Contractors acquired the 50% share previously owned by the Henry Walker Eltin Group.
